Every car has one 12V socket. Most of us are running more than one thing off it.

Engine off, 12.4V–12.7V — your battery is healthy.
Engine off, below 12.2V — it's discharging. Worth watching.
Engine off, below 12V — you may not start tomorrow.
Engine running, 13.7V–14.7V — your alternator is charging properly.
Engine running, below 13.5V or above 15V — something's wrong with the charging system. Get it looked at.

If your car sits between weekend drives, if you're running a big audio setup, or if the battery is more than four years old, that number on the dash is early warning of the morning you'd otherwise spend waiting for a jump start. It's a £2 part doing a job that costs a lot more to find out the hard way.
