Pick the plug that suits your car

1. USB-A if your car has a spare USB port — the tidier option, and the one most modern cars will take.
2. 12V socket if it doesn't, or if your USB ports are already spoken for by phones and dash cams. Plugs straight into the cigarette lighter, no adapter needed.

Three minutes, no tools

Peel the adhesive backing, press the strips into place under the dash and along the footwells, and route the cable out of sight. Plug in and it's done. No wiring, no fuse box, no trim removal, nothing that can't be undone in a minute if you sell the car.

On most cars the lights follow your ignition — turn the key and they come up, switch off and they go with it. Some older cars keep their sockets live all the time, so if yours does, unplug it when you're parked up for a few days.

Keep it road legal

Interior ambient lighting is fine in the UK as long as it doesn't distract you and isn't visible to other road users. Keep the strips low — footwells and under-dash — out of your direct eyeline and below window level. Avoid red or blue showing forwards or backwards through the glass. Fitted sensibly, this is exactly what manufacturers put in their own cars.
